This is a collection of 11 short manga works by Otomo Katsuhiro, a minor between the ages of 17 and 19, produced between 1971 and 1974, from his time as a student contributor to his professional debut, in the order they were produced and published.
The author made his debut at the tender age of 19 with "Juusei" (Gunsei), published in the August 4th Special Issue of Manga Action in 1973. None of these seven early short stories have ever been published in a book, so while many may have seen the titles in the list of works in the short story collection "Short Pieces," few have actually seen the originals; they are literally "phantom early works."
In addition to publishing all of these works for the first time, this book also includes four completely unpublished works, as well as sketches and submitted works drawn before his debut.
It is miraculous that the manuscripts for these works still exist, but the fact that the author gave permission for these unpublished works to be included is a special privilege that comes with the "Complete Works" project, and the realisation of this book can truly be called a "once in half a century miracle."
It's up to the reader to decide whether to despise this collection of rough, clumsy, and immature works, or to be horrified by the expressions of this "frightening child" who combines fresh sensibility with a maturity that is hard to believe for a teenager, but the value of this book is immeasurable as a "unique document" that records the moment when a creator who would later make his name known around the world was born into the world, and the events that preceded and followed that moment.
The cry of this still unknown "monster" who would go on to draw "AKIRA" in 1983, just 10 years after his debut, is finally here! He is reborn!!!
